The decision to abolish PT3 has aroused much discussion among Malaysians. After PMR, PT3 is the second time that the Ministry of Education has abolished the assessment test for Form 3 Secondary School.
The overall public opinion is disagreed on the abolishment of the PT3 exam, because is that without the test, children won't be motivated to study and academic performance may affect their future, and more people continue to have doubts and worries about the upcoming Form 3 assessment. But there’s still some of the public opinion is agree with the PT3 abolishment.
Online interview session with Ms. Lee Min Tin, the teacher of SMJK Kwang Hua
As an educator who also faced PT3 Abolishment with her students, Ms. Lee Min Tin, she said that the cancellation of PT3 is not so much a release of pressure on students, but more a concern for the future of students. Even the Form 3 teaching syllabus won’t change much but there are already have some signs that students lost the motivation to learning.
“During the two-year epidemic, student’s learning progress has lagged behind significantly, and the cancellation of PT3 has made more students feel that they do not want to study. When the students came back to school after two years of online classes, we found that the students knew nothing. Although we still teach Form 3 in our online classes, the students do not pay attention to the class. This seriously affects their learning and knowledge level, which will cause these students' poor academic performance compare to students who have faced PT3 in the past. Form 3 must face to select stream, so a set of evaluations is required as the standard for stream selection”
“I do not agree with the PT3 abolishment, although PT3 will bring some pressure to students, but sometimes students need a little pressure to push them forward. Because PT3 is still a basic stage, if students do not have a good basic, how they going to face SPM? Even the student gets a pass in SPM, it may just lucky. We cannot rule this out. Besides, when they come out of the society in the future, they will lose their direction, because in the process of learning, they will realize what they are interested in. "
Ms. Tan Hong Chun, who have taken PT3 before. From the perspective of experience, share what impact the existence of PT3 brings and whether it should be abolished.
Since both PT3 and UPSR have now been cancelled, this means that future students may only face the SPM in their school life. Future students will not experience the impact and help that the existence of PT3 will bring. Therefore, Ms Tan Hong Chun, who once get a full A in PT3, shared her opinion on PT3.
“The existence of PT3 has become my driving force. Even though PT3 will bring me more or less pressure, it is also because of this pressure it makes me to study harder and get good grades to prove it to everyone. Good grades will also give students more opportunities to realize their dreams. So, I don’t agree with the abolishment of PT3 because the students will lose their motivation to study and keep stand still at the same place or level.”
Ms, Tan Hong Yi, a 16 years old student who are the first batch to face the abolishment of PT3
Student Tan Hong Yi should have taken the PT3 exam when she was 15 years old last year in 2021, but due to the impact of the two-year epidemic, the PT3 exam has been delayed until the Ministry of Education officially announced the abolition of PT3 this year.
“Although the abolished of PT3 made my Form 3 very relax because the teacher no longer gave me so much homework, but it also caused me to lose motivation to study, because now it is completely left to the school to decide which stream my Form 4 should go to. Without PT3, my Form 3 life feel very boring and without challenging. And my school now only having two exams in a year, and the exam only cover few topics only unlike SPM it will cover Form 4 and Form 5 topics. So, without PT3 as a warm up, I have no confidence and some basic knowledge to sit for bigger exam like SPM.”
Online interview with Ms. Hoe Siao Mei because her child is the first batch facing PT3 abolished
Although most people are against PT3 abolishment, there are still some people who maintain an objective view. Some of the people or parents might think the government should abolished the PT3 and put more effort on other strength of the student rather than the exam result.
“I agree with the government to abolished PT3, because PT3 only bring stress to students and it only focus on the subject of Form1 to Form3 only, after the PT3 test the student still need to move ahead to SPM. SPM is more important, and I believe the SPM will not cover the subject of Form1 to Form3 anymore. I hope government should more concentrate on activities like sport for the lower secondary school rather than just sit for exam like the past.”
Online interview session with Mr. Tan Kok Bean, a business man of fish farm and a market store.
PT3 can not only increase knowledge but also train students' ability to distribute and deal with things. These two points are must-have conditions in the workplace, and many industries now focus on grades and certificates. If there are only SPM grades without PT3, can it give people a guarantee of confidence? Therefore, in order to explore this point, businessman Mr. Tan Kok Bean gave his own thoughts.
"For me, if I hire an employee, I will first pay attention to he/she's time concept and ability to do things. This is a very basic condition. If the he/she does not even have these conditions, even if they have a good PT3 or SPM, they may be affecting my business. But if they have good work ability and good grades, I will definitely give priority to them first rather than those who do not have good grades. Although we will never see their PT3 scores and may only have one SPM, but we can't obliterate their efforts. Although only having SPM scores may not give much guarantee, but I will observe their conversation and ability during the interview process”
