Opinions towards UPSR Abolishment

On April 28 2021, the Ministry of Education in Malaysia announced that starting this year, the Malaysian government officially abolished the unified examination for the sixth grade of primary school assessment.

It is reported that because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Education announced the cancellation of the exam for the first time. The senior minister said at a press conference that the above decision has been approved by the cabinet. After the repeal of UPSR, primary school students will be evaluated by other aspects, and relevant students will not be arranged to participate in any other examinations mainly based on written exams.

People have mixed opinions about this decision

After the release of this policy, people also had different views. Mr. Tam, his younger sister happened to face the cancellation of the examination at the primary school.

“My sister was in the near graduation stage in primary school, and they did feel less stressed after getting the news, they had more time to do other things.” He made it clear that after that he had noticeably felt less pressure on his sister and that the schoolwork was less intense.

However, there are also those who believe that students fail to go through large exams at the primary school level, which means that there is one less opportunity to exercise, this is not good for them later in junior high school and high school, and they can't adapt to the more difficult knowledge at once.

Children have more time to develop interests

China also made the same decision to cancel primary school exams a few years ago, at the same time, primary school students have more extracurricular time to participate in other activities, and Mr. Audrick Hong, who is a teacher in the interest-oriented class, said that after the abolition of the exam, the number of participants in the interest-oriented class has increased significantly.

“Although I am teaching older students, I often come into contact with primary school students, and after the cancellation of the exam, the number of primary school students in our organization has a significant increase trend, and many parents bring their children to cultivate interest.”

“I think it's a very good phenomenon that children have time to develop interests, which can both increase children's skills and tap potential, which is a good thing for the overall development of children.”

About what parents should do

Parents certainly play a very important role in this situation, the growth of children is very closely related to the discipline of parents. In such a situation, what should parents of primary school students do?

"As a parent, you need to weigh the problems of children's education, according to the economic factors of their families, make a long-term plan for the future of their children, parents still have to properly develop good learning habits for their children." Because of the reform of the system, children and parents have reduced pressure at the same time, many people are easy to take lightly, and developing good learning habits will also help in the future. ” Said by Mr, Audick.

As a trainee teacher in the school, Mr. Jordan Chew also gave his insights:“This is actually not just about the parents, this is the communication between different groups, such as the school and the parents of the exchange, if the child has any problems, both sides should actively communicate, which also helps the child to develop a good habit, help the child's growth.”

Anyway, such a decision must have been well thought out, the authorities must have made long-term plans, and now the most important thing is that children can grow up in all aspects, without exam pressure, do not lose interest in learning, and then improve in other aspects, which is a process that requires parents, schools and children to work together.
